​Protect young mouths during sports play
 
Spring has arrived in Niagara, and with it comes the desire to step outside, pick up a bat and a ball, and join the major leagues in celebrating the start of baseball season. 

Perhaps baseball isn’t your thing, but you would rather kick a soccer ball around, or catch a football, or go karting … or ride a mountain bike or a skateboard…

​For most of these sports, you don’t hesitate to protect your head and that of your child with a helmet. But according to the Ontario Dental Association, protecting a growing head, jaw and teeth, even for seemingly non-contact sports, is very important. We at Lakeport Dental strongly agree.

Sports Canada reports that 69% of Canadian youth participate in organized sports. From hockey, to soccer, to T-ball and baseball, basketball and even summer football and bike riding - wearing a mouth guard can prevent accidents that will cost youngsters their oral health.
 
Many athletes resist wearing a mouth guard because of its bulkiness or poor fit. A custom-made mouth guard isn’t that expensive, and may even be covered by your dental insurance.
