For those of us whose mouths are filled with appliances, such as braces, crowns, caps or bridges, we must always consider the safety of our meal and snack choices. But there is the sugar to consider, also. Popsicles and shaved-ice treats seem fairly harmless since they are water or juice based, but the sugar content could be harmful, encouraging bacteria growth or leading to cavities. Biting into very cold or icy treats could lead to chipped teeth or pain from cold sensitivity. Fresh fruit chilled in the refrigerator might be a better choice - but remember, fruit also contains sugars. It’s still a good idea to brush, rinse or floss after snacking.
It’s important to stay hydrated during warmer weather, but reaching for pop or sugary drinks, like sports drinks, can lead to the wearing away of tooth enamel. These types of drinks also add unnecessary calories to your diet. It’s better to reach for water, especially between meals. If you are treating yourself to a sugary fizzy drink, it’s better to use a straw, to limit the exposure of your teeth to the liquid. If you love to eat fresh, buttery corn on the cob, take care: Corn is one of those sneaky summer vegetables that can cause harm to dental crowns, caps and veneers. It’s probably safer to slice your corn off the cob to enjoy it. It’s the same as biting into an apple - if you have dental work in the front of your mouth, take the safer route and slice your apple instead! We all love to indulge in our favourite summer treats - s’mores, candy floss, popcorn, freezies … the list is endless. Developing the habit of rinsing, brushing and/or flossing after snacking will keep decay from attacking your teeth. Not to mention that if you can stick with a regular flossing routine, your dental hygienist will love you! At Lakeport Dental, we’d love to talk to you about your summer dental care!
